Vanessa Hudgens, Derek Hough, and more have teamed up with nonprofit organization I’m a Dancer Against Cancer to support dancers battling cancer!
The organization provides fundds for dance educators, dancers and parents touched by cancer in some way. Vanessa and Derek, along with Julianne Hough, Paula Abdul and Chita Rivera are using their platforms to help raising awareness leading up to the charity’s Industry Dance Awards in August. The group actually filmed a PSA with dancers Ruby Kaufman, Chloe Frank and Ahna Rasmussen to inspire other dancers fighting the disease.
The group all dance in some capacity and have been directly affected by cancer as well, so it was great to hear their experiences. “When someone you love has cancer, it’s a very hard thing to deal with for them and for you, but the thing that honestly got me through it was my community that I was surrounded by,” Vanessa, whose father sadly passed away from cancer earlier this year, said in an interview with PEOPLE.
Paula admitted that dancing truly helped her sister who was diagnosed with cancer and went through chemo and radiation. “We still danced even if she couldn’t leave the house,” she said. “Even when she was violently ill, we kept playing the music and we kept dancing and smiling and laughing, and I gotta tell you, that was one major focal point that kept her going.”
