Pearl Jam, Big Sean and More Donate to Flint Water Crisis

Stars from all over, including Pearl Jam and Big Sean, are donating money and water in the wake of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

According to Rolling Stone, Pearl Jam announced on Friday that they would be donating $300,000 to the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund, and encouraged others to give as well on CrowdRise. Big Sean also made a donation of $10,000 through his The Sean Anderson Foundation. The rapper also started a CrowdRise campaign, which has raised a little over $20,000 for the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Michigan.  Other stars like Cher and Jimmy Fallon have donated to the cause as well.

For almost two years now, the city of Flint has been using water from the toxic Flint River, which saved money for the city but has had horrible effects on the residents there. The water has not been treated for lead, and the amount of chlorine has been hiked to very high levels to fight bacteria. The lead poisoning, which can lead to both stunted mental development and physical growth, is irreversible, with impacted residents having to carry problems from this water for the rest of their lives. Reportedly, local and state officials lied to residents for months about the danger the water would pose to their health.

“I am devastated by the water crisis that has put the entire city of Flint in a state of emergency,” Big Sean, who is from Detroit (an hour away from Flint), said in a statement. “It is my hope that we can help by raising the money needed to ensure that the children who have been hit the hardest receive the care that they need today and well into the future.”

Donations to the Flint Water Fund are going directly toward the purchase of water filters and bottled water, as well as emergency support services and prevention efforts. In fact, the nonprofit has already purchased 11,000 filters systems and 5,000 replacement filters. Any money left over after immediate needs have been met will go toward the Flint Child Health and Development Fund.

It’s sad and outrageous that this even happened. I hope that action is taken to ensure that this doesn’t happen again, as well as action taken against these officials that lied to the residents of Flint. It’s great to see different celebs and nonprofits working to help them. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Flint, Michigan!
