Leonardo DiCaprio Donates $3.4 Million to Indigenous Groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon

After dedicating his Golden Globe Award for Best Actor to indigenous groups around the world, Leonardo DiCaprio has donated $3.4 million to groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon through The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

According to Remezcla.com, Leo donated a complete total of $15 million for various environmental projects. $3.4 million will go towards groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon who have been affected by petroleum extraction. The money will specifically help the Cofanes, Secoyas, Sionas, and Huaoranis.

Other funds will go towards monitoring commercial fishing in Oceania, conservation of coral reefs in the Seychelles, promoting renewable energy in the United States, and protecting the rain forest from palm oil deforestation.

“The destruction of our planet continues at a pace we can no longer afford to ignore,” Leonardo said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We have a responsibility to innovate a future where the habitability of our planet does not come at the expense of those who inhabit it. I am proud to support these organizations who are working to solve humankind’s greatest challenge.”

It’s incredible how much Leonardo has been able to give back through his own foundation, specifically towards environmental issues. Kudos to him and his team!
