Back in June, Akon announced his new initiative, Akon Lighting Africa, to provide electricity to communities across Africa. Now the rapper is expanding that mission to bring electricity to countries in Latin America as well!
According to VIBE, Akon announced his plans on his Instagram page, stating on one post, “Proud to announce that AKON lighting Africa has now expanded! We are now in Latin America creating the new initiative AKON LIGHTING LATIN AMERICA!! Clean energy for all.” The artist also posted pics from his meeting with Antonio Carlos Magalhães Neto, the mayor of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, where he proposed bringing his solar-powered electricity effort to poor communities in the area.
The solar power program has already helped to provide over 600 million people in Africa. In addition to this new expansion to Latin America, Akon Lighting Africa plans to spread across even more countries in Africa, from Kenya to South Africa.
Wow! Truly, Akon is making huge strides with this effort! Kudos to him and his team for continuing to work towards providing electricity to these disadvantaged communities.
