Penélope Cruz officially joined Instagram this week, calling attention to child leukemia through the social media platform.

According to E! News, the actress shared a photo and short video of her spending time with an 8-year-old boy named Lucas, who is battling leukemia. Lucas is also part of part of Uno Entre Cien Mil, a charity that fights against this disease specifically with children. Penélope serves as the ambassador of the organization.

“My beautiful new friend Lucas,” she captioned the photo. “An 8 year old full of wisdom. @unoentrecienmil Charity bracelet @viceroyoficial.”

In her short video, Lucas not only announces Penélope being on Instagram, but also talks about the documentary that she is working on surrounding this disease in children. Lucas will make an appearance in the film.

“My goal is to raise awareness about this sensitive issue,” the actress said at a news conference to unveil the project in early October. “I will soon meet the children. Some have beaten the disease, others are working on it. I will just be an observer and it will be they who tell the world what is happening.”

Lucas is without a doubt @unoentrecienmil Not only for beating leuchemia after fighting it for several years but also for how priviledge he makes you feel while listening to wise words and his amazing story. Lots of love and hope in the beginning of my new adventure as director of the documentary #unoentrecienmil A documentary about children’s leuchemia. Charity bracelet @viceroy

It’s great that Penélope is dedicating her time to highlighting this illness. I’m very interested to see her documentary when it comes out!

  1. That’s awesome that she is using social media for good! We have had family members die from this, so I am happy to see people raising awareness.
