Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and several more celebs gathered in front of a crowd of over 60,000 people for the Global Citizen Festival on September 26!
According to Mashable, the festival was held in New York City’s Central Park, and promoted awareness of worldwide issues such as poverty, education, inequality, and sustainability. The festival encouraged attendees to be a “global citizen,” and take action towards making the world a better place to live, starting with speaking with their local government.
Hosted by Hugh Jackman and Stephen Colbert, the festival was headlined by Pearl Jam, Beyoncé, Ed and Coldplay, with mini sets from Tori Kelly and Common (who also brought out Sting). Other celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Olivia Wilde, Bono, Salma Hayek, and Bill Nye, made presentations concerning various causes as well.
The festival was strongly supported by leadership from the White House, with Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill, as well as First Lady Michelle Obama coming out. Other world leaders and activists made appearances as well, including Queen Rania of Jordan, Malala Yousafzai, and other European prime ministers.
Though the performances were fun to watch (Global Citizen offered a free stream on YouTube), the most important and powerful momentss of the festival were hearing about the different causes and how to be involved. It was great to see so many come out to be a part!
