Kacey Musgraves Doesn’t “Let People’s Approval Make Or Break What I’m Doing”

Grammy-winning country singer Kacey Musgraves is a grassroots superstar, with a beyond-catchy throwback sound, knife-sharp lyrics, and Willie Nelson and Katy Perry in her corner. As she prepares to release her new album, get ready to fall in love with her – big hair, badass attitude, and all. Check out the highlights from the Redbook interview below:

Kacey Musgraves on critics offended by her lyrics, “Roll up a joint, or don’t” from ‘Follow Your Arrow’:
“I’ve come to conclusion that people are always going to find a way to be offended about something, and it’s almost like they want to be. I won’t be everybody’s cup of tea. I’ve found peace in that. I’m cool with not being the biggest superstar on the planet. I don’t let people’s approval make or break what I’m doing.”

How she manages to avoid the party girl life on tour:
“I’ve always been pretty even-keeled, but I’ve had really good people around me. I’ve had my boyfriend on the road with me for a couple of years because he’s in our band. I think the craziest thing we do is venture out and find a Thai place on Yelp that we’ve never been to. We might jam a little bit and have some wine.”

Why she writes songs about self-acceptance:
“I think it comes from growing up in an area where a lot of kids really cannot be themselves. After high school, my best friend came out to me, and he was like, ‘I don’t feel like I can be myself, and you’re the first person I’m telling.’ That is still a lot of people’s reality. So if a kid feels like they can walk a little taller because of something I sang, I’m inspired by that.”

What she learned about gal pal, Katy Perry on their tour last year:
“She’s almost exactly like you would imagine. I mean, she’s got major balls. You can put this on the record: I’ve seen Katy Perry’s proverbial balls. She’s had some doors slammed in her face, and it’s cool to see that if you keep doing what you think is good, it will work out.”
