Akon Creates “Solar Academy” To Bring Electricity to People in Africa

Akon press conference on Sustainable Energy for All

Akon has announced the launch of his Akon Lighting Africa initiative which will help to bring electricity to people in Africa!

According to The SOURCE, the initiative will bring a new “solar academy,” scheduled to open this summer in Mali. It will train African engineers and entrepreneurs to develop solar-powered electricity systems and micro grids. The academy was announced at the second United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York last week.

Samba Baithily, co-founder of Akon Lighting Africa said, “We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise.” Because Africa has mostly bright weather, solar energy is definitely the best route for electricity for people in Africa.

This is so incredible! I’m not sure what sparked Akon and his team to come up with this idea, but it’s a great one, and very needed!

  1. I’m not familiar with him, but I think it’s great he’s doing this. Good for him.

  2. I really hope they can create this dream plan and make it cost effective and I also hope it will create some stable long term income for people who can not afford electricity. Sounds like it would be a great resource if used in a ethical manner.

  3. Akon has been somewhat out of the limelight for a while, and it’s so good to see him doing awesome things! I love this initiative to bring electricity to more in Africa!
