Stars like Julianne Moore, Russell Simmons, and Alyssa Milano have pledged to Wear Orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 2!
PR Newswire reported that the Wear Orange campaign symbolizes the value of human life, and brings to light efforts to bring down the amount of gun violence in the United States. In just two weeks, over 140 groups and companies have joined including MTV, HBO, Essence Magazine, and Motown Records. Quite a few celebs as well as 60 U.S. mayors and Congress members have also pledged their commitment!
June 2nd will be the first annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day. This day and the Wear Orange campaign was brought to life by a group of Chicago teens who asked their classmates to wear orange in remembrance of their friend Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed by gun violence days after participating in President Barack Obama‘s second inaugural parade. The color was chosen because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods. This year, Hadiya would have turned 18 on June 2nd (it was also stated that First Lady Michelle Obama would give the commencement address at what would have been Hadiya’s graduation ceremony on June 9th).
