More than 188,000 have signed a Care2 petition to save Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, which is at risk of losing its land, putting nearly 400 animals at risk. Pop star and sanctuary trustee and patron Leona Lewis has been leading the charge by posting the Care2 petition to her social media accounts. Other celebrities who have urged social media followers to sign include Colbie Caillat, Kelly Clarkson, Suki Waterhouse, Mel B, Olly Murs, Katie Melua, Alex & Sierra, and Pixie Lott.
“Since the first day I visited Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, I knew it would become a big part of my life and is a cause very dear to my heart,” Lewis told Care2. “The work they are doing to save these abused and neglected animals is essential. They would simply have nowhere else to go if the sanctuary wasn’t here, which is why we need to do everything we can to try and save this incredible place.”
The sanctuary, which houses nearly 400 animals, has come under threat after supermarket giant Tesco, which owns the land, announced it would make cuts totalling £250 million. A spokeswoman said the company would be reviewing options for the land on which Hopefield is based, raising concerns that the land may be sold. Hopefield has rented the land from Tesco since 1992 for a peppercorn rent.
“At Hopefield, these animals get to live out their lives peacefully and free from abuse,” Lewis said. “Losing the land to building development could mean that almost 400 animals currently in the care of Hopefield will lose their home — we simply can’t let this happen.”
The Care2 petition was started by Lianne Angliss, who has worked at Hopefield for a decade. She says many of the animals are aging and in ill health, meaning if the sanctuary closes the animals could be killed.
“Hopefield is my life,” Angliss told Care2. “I run it with my partner David Schlaich, and we put everything into the sanctuary and its animals…It is an amazing place to work with friendly staff and volunteers [who all have] one goal, and that is to save animals from abuse and neglect, and educate to try [to] improve animal welfare.”
The Care2 petition asks Brentwood Council to “reclassify the land as a leisure and recreation area, which would reduce the value of the land, giving Hopefield Animal Sanctuary a chance to buy it, in order to save the animals.”
