The Silver Shield Foundation, founded by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, will pay for the tuition for the children of one of the NYPD officers that was killed over the weekend.

NYPD officer Rafael Ramos along with his partner Wenjian Lui were killed in a senseless murder by a man claiming to protest the police brutality in the area. Officer Ramos left behind a 13-year-old son Jaden, as well as another son Justin, who is a student at Bowdoin College in Maine.

The Silver Shield Foundation has long contributed to the education for children of NYPD officers slain in the line of duty. Steinbrenner, who died in 2010, began the organization back in 1982, and his friend, former Olympian Jim Fuchs, was in charge until his own death in 2010. The foundation is now under the direction of Fuchs’ daughter Casey and has paid for the educations of thousands of children of NYPD, FDNY, state police and Port Authority workers, as well as 700 children who lost a parent during 9/11.

It’s a sad and tragic situation, and no amount of money will ever bring these boys’ father back. However, it is a great thing that their education will be taken care of, and that is one less burden off their shoulders. Thoughts and prayers go out to these families.
