Demi Lovato has announced that she has created a scholarship fund in honor of her late father, who also struggled with mental illness.
On Thursday’s Good Morning America, Lovato made her first television appearance since her father’s death last week. Even though she and her father Patrick Lovato were estranged, it hasn’t been easy to lose her dad.
She said, “I’m handling it OK. My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship. But at the end of the day, he’s still my dad. I grew up with him, and he’s a wonderful person.”
Demi credits her fans for helping her get through last week’s difficult time. Demi said, “The best thing about my fans is that they have stood by me through everything that I’ve been through in my life,” she continued. “They can help me get through anything.”
She went onto add, “I’ve dealt with mental illnesses, and my father also dealt with mental illness. He wasn’t able to function in society very well.”
So in honor of her father’s memory, Lovato announced the launch of the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program, which will help with the cost of treatment at Cast Recovery.
You know what, I am loving the fact that she is not afraid to speak out on mental illness. It has such a stigma around it and hopefully by bringing attention to it and by supporting those who have a mental illness, Lovato will help bring that stigma to an end!
